Bearings
What is ABEC?
ABEC stands for Annular Bearing Engineers’ Committee. This committee works to determine the standards for bearings for the Anti-Friction Bearing Manufacturers Association (AFBMA).
So basically the higher the ABEC number means that it had to pass more tests and is of higher standards and quality than a lower number. The number rating system ranges from 1,3,5,7, and 9. However, the higher the ABEC number also means the higher precision of the bearing. This translates to more care…So an ABEC 5 bearing will be sturdy and allow your wheels to roll smoothly without you having to take them apart and clean them.
It’s a good idea to add a bit of lubricant to your bearings when they are feeling a bit sticky. Never use WD 40! WD40 will initially feel like it has helped but eventually it will eat away the grease your your bearings will be worse off than before. Always use a recommended bearing lubricant.
